Meeting Meaningful Use Criteria

With all of the confusion surrounding the Meaningful Use requirements, it is no wonder that facilities are uncertain of which software solutions would most benefit their radiology departments.

The Corvallis Clinic has been using RISynergy®, the Radiology Information System from Swearingen Software since 1994. Although RISynergy has always had the ability to accept inbound HL7 orders and turn them into visit records (and thus helping customers achieve Meaningful Use), The Corvallis Clinic had never utilized that capability because of their unique need to convert some of those inbound HL7 orders into schedule records.

Over the last few months, The Corvallis Clinic has been working with Swearingen Software to create an additional feature within RISynergy that holds the electronic orders in a queue so that they can either schedule that patient or create the visit record. This holding file, called the Orders Pending Worklist also allows them to verify the reason for the test and other pertinent information.

Mike Stringari, the PACs Manager at Corvallis says, “Here at The Corvallis Clinic, to meet our timeline for meaningful use in our EHR we rolled out electronic radiology orders. Meaningful use is directly tied to data from our EHR. To make this a reality, our partners at Swearingen Software developed an order pending queue where the electronic orders can reside until we create schedules or visits for our patients. This was a big project. It proves that you can indeed use products from multiple vendors and still be successful in meeting today's complex criteria for CPOE (computerized physician order entry).”

Together, Corvallis and Swearingen have worked to develop and refine this process and have dramatically reduced the number of scheduled and visit records that The Corvallis Clinic has had to cancel in their facility.
